Waste management in the state of Ohio is governed by the Division of Materials and Waste Management of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. With the EPA’s approval, Ohio has been authorized to carry out the hazardous waste management provisions of the RCRA, enforce those laws, and create its own laws on hazardous and nonhazardous waste management. However, any new laws must be at least as demanding as existing federal waste management legislation and they must be approved by the EPA before being enacted.
Due to the industries present in Ohio, the state has some specific waste management needs that are commonly encountered, including:
Radioactive waste:
Ohio has three nuclear power plants: Perry, Davis-Besse, and Beaver Valley. The fuel used to produce nuclear energy is radioactive and must be disposed of properly.
Railcar spill cleanup:
Ohio is one of the ten states in the US with the greatest number of freight railroads and miles of railroad tracks. Should railcar incidents arise, Clean Management can provide emergency remediation and cleanup services.
