Hydro excavation
What is hydro excavation?
Using the power of pressurized water, hydro excavation removes or moves soil away from underground utilities, water lines, potholes, and other areas of interest. This equipment combines with a vacuum system and a debris tank to fully remove displaced soil when necessary. This is a safer and more environmentally friendly method than alternative options.
How it works
Using highly-pressurized water, hydro excavation cuts through and breaks up soil (even in winter conditions when the ground is more solid). The attached vacuum will then collect the slurry from the excavation location and move it into the debris tank.
There are two vacuum source options to select from: fan systems or displacement blowers. The fan system can move huge amounts of air at once, and it is relatively easy to use, which makes the excavation process faster and simpler for the operator. On the other hand, the displacement blower can move the air farther than the fan system, but it takes longer.
Uses
Hydro excavation is often utilized in a variety of contexts. The utilities industry is one of the primary users of this technology, as workers in this industry frequently need to access underground facilities or open up areas for line and pole installations. It can also be used in the context of landscaping and sewer rehabilitation, since the pressurized water does not carry the same risks as mechanical equipment.
Benefits of hydro excavation
Before hydro excavation, excavators used manual or mechanical digging methods that were much less efficient than. Manual digging required more time and mechanical methods were more prone to damaging lines or workers.
This technique is much more accurate, and, since it uses no metal apparatuses, it is much less prone to damaging underground pipes and cables. Because it is safer, this method reduces the need for costly repairs and restoration efforts, thus reducing downtime and liability costs.
