The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality is authorized to handle most hazardous waste management initiatives in Mississippi. While it can regulate the “generation, transportation, storage, treatment, and disposal” of hazardous waste, this regulating body is not federally authorized to carry out the portion of the RCRA that concerns corrective action. It must, instead, work with the EPA to complete tasks in this area.
Among other things, particular waste management topics of concern for Mississippi include:
Pharmaceutical waste:
After agriculture, manufacturing is one of Mississippi’s largest industries. This includes the manufacturing of chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
Hazardous waste disposal:
Mining of aggregates such as sand and gravel is another major industry. These products are considered hazardous wastes when they are disposed.
